Lipiflow explained

In these toggles we explain what you need to know about Lipiflow

Dry Eye Syndrome is a common eye condition, occurring when the eyes are unable to properly lubricate the surface of the eye. Dry eye is a chronic condition that can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as red, irritated eyes and eye soreness. In mild cases, dry eye can be managed with the use of over-the-counter drops and medications, but more severe cases may require medical attention and individualized treatment to control the symptoms of dry eye.

Common symptoms of dry eye syndrome are varied, but frequently include:

  • Redness and irritation
  • Soreness
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Watery eyes
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Contact lens intolerance

To help manage dry eye symptoms, Dr. Khosrof is proud to offer  LipiFlow at New York Eye & Retina, which can help manage dry eye symptoms and maintain healthy vision in patients suffering from chronic dry eye.

LipiFlow is a medical system designed to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, an underlying cause of dry eye. Located inside the eyelids, meibomian glands produce meibum, a thin oil that keeps the eyes lubricated and healthy. If these oils become thick, they can block the meibomian glands and cause dry eye syndrome.

LipiFlow uses thermal pulse technology, which applies pressure and heat to eyelids and helps to dissolve the thick oils that can cause blockage in the meibomian glands. The LipiFlow system flushes these oils from the eyelids, helping to regulate oil production.

LipiFlow helps to alleviate the uncomfortable dry eye symptoms caused by the imbalance of oils coating the eye.

During the LipiFlow procedure, sterile “activators” are placed under and over the eyelids, which protect the eyes from the gentle heat and pressure of the dry eye treatment.

The LipiFlow system gently warms the eyelids, helping to liquify thick gland secretions. Once they become liquid, the LipiFlow system gently massages the eyelids to help the oils release from the glands. Patients often describe the sensation as similar to a gentle eye massage.

This treatment method cleans and opens the meibomian glands and allows them to produce healthier oils, improving the overall health of the tear film and making your eyes more comfortable. Each LipiFlow treatment session takes about 12 minutes to complete.

LipiFlow is safe, and is approved for the treatment of dry eye by the FDA.

After LipiFlow treatment, it typically takes between 6 and 8 weeks for patients to experience the maximum benefits from this dry eye treatment method. Most patients report significant relief from dry eye symptoms.

The results from LipiFlow are not permanent, and typically last for about a year. These treatments can be repeated over time for ongoing symptom management and relief.

To determine if you are a candidate for dry eye treatment using LipiFlow, Dr. Khosrof will first perform a thorough eye exam. During this exam, he will test your vision and evaluate your unique dry eye symptoms, which will determine if LipiFlow could be right for you.

The Lipiscan system allows Dr. Khosrof to capture an accurate image of the meibomian glands in your eyelids, which can help to determine if they have been blocked and are unable to produce oils that help to lubricate the eye. When this occurs, it is called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
