Allergies explained

In these toggles we explain what you need to know about allergies

Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye” from the redness and inflammation that occurs, is a very common disorder of the cornea that affects millions of people around the world a year.

Symptoms include:

  • A gritty feeling in one or both eyes
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Excessive tearing
  • Discharge
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Pink discoloration to the whites of your eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Conjunctivitis can have many causes, including:

  • Allergies
  • Viruses
  • Bacterial infections

If severe cases of conjunctivitis are left untreated, they may worsen and impair vision.

We can diagnose conjunctivitis based on your history, symptoms, and an examination of the eye.

In rare cases, we may take a sample of the liquid that drains from your eye for laboratory analysis.

If the condition is a result of an allergy, we can address it with eye drops. These may include medications that help control allergic reactions, such as antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers, or drugs that help control inflammation, such as decongestants, steroids and anti-inflammatory drops.

K.K.

Dr. Khosrof improved my eye sight from 20/400 to 20/80. I had previously see 2 other retina specialists and 1 optometrist and none of them were able to help me. He’s terrific!
