Astigmatism explained

In these toggles we explain what you need to know about astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common eye condition that causes your vision to be blurred or distorted at near and far distances.

Astigmatism symptoms may include:

  • Blurry vision or areas of distorted vision
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Squinting to try to see clearly
  • Eye discomfort

Astigmatism is the result of an irregular curvature of the eye’s cornea or lens. If your cornea or lens is not evenly curved, light rays aren’t refracted properly.

Astigmatism is very common. Doctors do not know why corneal shape differs from person to person; however, they do know that astigmatism is hereditary.

We can detect astigmatism by performing a comprehensive eye examination which includes a refraction assessment and an eye health exam.

We will test your visual acuity and ask you to read letters on an eye chart to determine the clarity of your vision at certain distances.

Refractive laser eye surgery

The most effective way of treating astigmatism permanently, if you wish to be free of glasses and contact lenses, is with refractive laser eye surgery.

Types of refractive surgery for astigmatism include:

  • LASIK  – This is the most common form of laser eye surgery and is suitable for over 90% of patients.
  • LASEK
  • PRK
  • Epi-LASIK
  • SMILE

Other types of refractive surgeries include clear lens extraction and implantable contact lenses.

After a complete evaluation, we will be able to determine which surgery is best for you.
