Nearsightedness explained

In these toggles we explain what you need to know about nearsightedness

Nearsightedness, otherwise known as myopia, is a common refractive error that makes it difficult to see things clearly in the distance.

Nearsightedness is the most common vision problem. It typically starts to develop during childhood and can progress gradually or rapidly.

Symptoms of nearsightedness include:

  • Squinting
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • The need to sit closer to the television or computer to see it clearly
  • The need to hold material closer when reading

Nearsightedness can occur due to one or a combination of the following factors:

  • The eye grows too long
  • The cornea is too curved
  • The lens inside the is too thick

These abnormalities cause the eye to focus the image in front of the retina instead of directly on its surface.

We can detect nearsightedness by performing a comprehensive eye examination which includes a refraction assessment and an eye health exam.

The most effective way of treating nearsightedness, if you wish to be free of glasses and contact lenses, is with refractive laser eye surgery or lens replacement.

Types of refractive surgery for nearsightedness include:

  • LASIK – This is the most common form of laser eye surgery and is suitable for over 90% of patients.
  • Epi-LASIK
  • PRK
  • Refractive lens exchange

After a complete evaluation, we will be able to determine which surgery is best for you.

Refractive surgery is only possible once your nearsightedness has stabilized, this is usually by your early 20s.

Could you be a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery?

Dr. Khosrof is an outstanding physician and surgeon with a great bedside manner. As a fellow Ophthalmologist, I have always been impressed by his talent.

Dr. Khosrof improved my eye sight from 20/400 to 20/80. I had previously see 2 other retina specialists and 1 optometrist and none of them were able to help me. He’s terrific!
